Best Meal Planning Software for Dietitians
What each tool actually costs, who it suits, and where it falls short — including where our own free tools do and do not fit. Prices checked August 2026.
Disclosure. We build free nutrition calculators, so we are not neutral — but we do not sell meal-planning or practice-management software, and there are no affiliate links on this page. We do not compete with anything below. Where our tools lose, the table says so.

The tools in detail
That Clean Life
~$30–60/moStrength. Largest curated recipe library and the fastest path from plan to a branded client PDF.
Weakness. Nutrient analysis is shallow on lower tiers; not a practice-management system.
Nutrium
~$15–49/moStrength. Meal planning, appointments and a client app in one, at a lower price than the US incumbents.
Weakness. Recipe library is thinner and more European; US food database coverage is weaker.
NutriAdmin
~$35–75/moStrength. Strong forms, invoicing and note templates alongside meal planning.
Weakness. Interface feels dated; meal planning is competent rather than a highlight.
Practice Better
~$25–155/moStrength. Scheduling, telehealth, charting, billing and client portal — the category leader.
Weakness. Most expensive, and meal planning is a secondary feature rather than its core.
Healthie
~$19–149+/moStrength. Superbills, claims, EHR depth and a genuine API.
Weakness. Overkill and over-priced for a solo coach; meal planning is basic.
Protein Calculators (this site)
FreeStrength. Evidence-cited targets, 22 micronutrients against age and sex-specific DRIs, branded printable handouts, and client records that never leave your browser.
Weakness. No meal plans, no recipe library, no scheduling or billing, no client-facing app.
How to choose
The question that actually decides it is what you hand the client at the end of a session. If the deliverable is a week of meals with a shopping list, you need a recipe library and you should pay for one — building that yourself in a spreadsheet is a false economy. If the deliverable is a set of targets and a conversation about how to hit them, most of what these tools charge for is arithmetic you are already confident doing, and the subscription is buying presentation rather than capability.
The second question is whether you bill insurance. If you do, you are likely a HIPAA covered entity, which narrows the field to vendors that will sign a Business Associate Agreement and rules out most lightweight tools regardless of features.
Where our free tools fit
Honestly: as a companion, not a replacement. We do not generate meal plans, and we are not going to — it is a different product with a recipe-licensing problem attached. What the client tool does is the calculation layer — evidence-cited protein and macro targets, 22 micronutrients scored against age and sex-specific DRIs rather than generic label values, and a printable handout with your name on it. Branded handouts are a paid-tier feature at both That Clean Life and Practice Better; here it is a print stylesheet, so it is free.
The trade-off is real: your client records live in your browser, so there is no sync, no backup, and no recovery if you clear your data. That is also why we never receive them.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the best meal planning software for dietitians?
- If generating and delivering client meal plans is the core of your practice, That Clean Life has the strongest recipe library and the fastest route to a branded client PDF. If you want meal planning bundled with appointments and a client app at a lower price, Nutrium is the better value. If you need full practice management — scheduling, charting, billing, telehealth — Practice Better is the category leader and meal planning is a secondary feature.
- Is there free nutrition software for dietitians?
- Nothing free does meal-plan generation and delivery well — that is what the paid tools are actually selling. Free tools cover the calculation layer: energy and macro targets, micronutrient analysis against DRIs, and printable client handouts. Many practitioners pair a free calculator with a paid meal-planning tool rather than paying for a calculator built into software they already own.
- Do I need HIPAA-compliant nutrition software?
- It depends on you, not the software. HIPAA applies to covered entities — providers who conduct electronic standard transactions such as insurance claims — and to their business associates. A cash-pay coach who never bills insurance is usually neither. If you are a covered entity and a vendor stores identifiable client health data on its servers, you generally need a signed Business Associate Agreement with them. No software is 'HIPAA compliant' by itself; compliance is a property of how you use it.
- How much does dietitian software cost?
- Roughly $15 to $155 per month as of August 2026, depending on tier and whether you need practice management. Meal-planning specialists cluster around $30–60/month; full practice-management platforms run $25–155/month. Most vendors price per practitioner, so group practices multiply quickly, and several gate branded client handouts behind higher tiers.
- Can I use spreadsheets instead?
- Many practitioners do, and for target-setting it works. Spreadsheets fall down on three things: recipe-level nutrient analysis, producing something client-facing that looks professional, and keeping calculations consistent as guidance changes. A free calculator plus a printable handout covers the second and third without a subscription.
